Activities

Horseback Riding

Ride on horseback under thousands of coconut trees and cross white sandy beaches. Climb with your horse the Seger Hills and see the picturesque, steep coastline with curving bays and placid waters and look out to the sea (nearly) untill Australia.

Or take a ride to remote jungle villages and watch the Sasakpeople working in their fields or washing their clothes at the village well. Also full-day excursions to lonely bays can be arranged.

Batcave

Visit the close by batcave (which you can find in none of the guidebooks) to watch millions of bats leaving the cave at sundown. You can hear and smell the impressive masses of animals flying over your head. At the same time falcons, sometimes joined by White-head sea-eagles, come to the cave

hunting for their dinner. This is a show which is repeated every evening at sunset !

The bays of Tanjung Aan and Mawun

You will find it difficult to decide, which of the two bays is more beautiful. Both are secluded,

circle-shaped bays, with powdery white sand. The clear turquoise seawater reflects the picturesque

rock-scenary in the background

Surfing

Kuta is one of the best surfspots in Asia. In Kuta a surfshop sells or rents surfboards and other

equipment .

Bumbang, Gerupuk, Ekas and Mauwi are only some spots, where surfers search “The Wave“.

Ask Lalu Akhmad (at Seger Reef Cafe), he himself was a pretty good surfer (at least that´s what he

tells everyone).

Snorkeling

As mentioned before, snorkeling in the lagoon of Kuta can be rewarding, but you must to go out to

the middle of the bay. Snorkling one hour before lowtide is no risk because the incoming sea sets a

light stream to the beach and you find it always easy to return.

If you go into the bay, you need to wear plastic sandals to protect your feet against bottom

urchins. You find them only at a distance, so you can swim without any harm close the beach.

Close to Seger Beach is also good for snorkeling.

Market in Kuta

Every Wednesday and Sunday is a market in Kuta. Sunday is the best day for a visit to the market.

You see barbers providing shaves and haircuts to the local men. A kettle-smith repairs boilers and a

blacksmith offers his service, lighting his fire right on the ground. The selection of fish for sale

depends on the season and the luck of the local fishermen. Strong winds or high waves, will keep

the fisherment out in their tiny boats. When fresh fish is not available, dried or salted fish is offered.

A grilled, dried cuttlefish is a delicacy !

An abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables make the market colourful.

A trip to the market is always worth a visit. Go early, between 7.00 and 10.00 o´clock.

And to fit in into this image, a big part of transportation is still done by Cidomos, the small horsedrawn

carts of Lombok.

Market in Sengkol

Monday and Thursday is market in the neighboring village of Sengkol, which can be reached in

about 15 minutes by motorbike. This market is considerably larger than the one in Kuta. Here you

finaly can buy the goat, something you always dreamed of !

Fishmarket

To visit the daily fish market in Tanjung Luar (approx. 1 hour drive) you must get up before

daybreak. . It´s not rare to see sharks up to 5 meters or gigantic Mantas as part of the nightly catch!

You will see all kind of fish. Many types you might not even know, that they even exist.

Many foreign travelers will buy a fish there (or mussels, crabs, cuttlefishes, octopusses), to prepare them in the comfort of home. Or you bring them to a Restaurant to be grilled, cooked or fried according to your instructions.

Awang Bay , to the east (approx.1 hour)

A fairly adventureous road leads straight to Awang Bay. The views along the way are nice and you'll

get a good impression of the countryside in the southeast of Lombok. Behind Awang you can find

“salinas“ for salt production from sea-water.

In the final production step, they cook the salt-sole over woodfire, to get a final salt product which

doesn`t absorb moisture, even in an atmosphere with high humidity.

Selong Blanak in the west (45 minutes)

Much better road travels west, uphill along the mountain ridges with beautiful panoramic views

opening through the trees from one bay to the next bay and so on. On your way throug tabacco

plantations you will pass Mawun Beach. The good road ends when you reach Selong Blanak, a

small fishing-village. The people here don`t have cooling devices, so they cook and salt or smoke

the fish as soon as they are brought to shore.

Don´t miss the sight of the bay of Selong Blanak.

Walks in the morning

If you are an early bird, a walk in the misty light of early dawn is an extraordinary experience.

Everywhere you see the flickering wood fires which cook rice to last the day. Early morning

activities take a short paulse when the muezzin calls for the morning prayer. All Sasaks in the rural

villages vehemently believe that only a woodfire can create the lovely aroma of the tasty Lombok

rice.

Early moring walks along the beach to the Novotel hotel show you the mighty, nearly 4000 meters

high vulcano Rinjani. Temperatures at that time of the day are comfortably cool.

Round Lombok

In a long day excursion you can make it around the island by car. A driver and /or a guide will show

you the highlights of the island. It´s worth doing the circle, because the north and the surrounding of

Rinjani is so different from Kuta in the south. In the East you find exclusively mosques, while in the

west you see big Hindu tempels and old palaces. Or you feed eggs to Holy Eels !
